Devil's Den State Park

Devil's Den State Park is in northwest Arkansas just a few miles off of Interstate 540. It has a lot of hiking trails. The "Den" that the park is named for is a long cave that can be walked through (with a flashlight) along one of the trails. I didn't go very far into the cave on this trip. I'm not sure what the wide-load limits are. I am going to return to the park after my getting-in-shape montage. (The movies make it look so easy.)

We were so young and foolish then. We had no idea what horrors awaited.

As you can see, I nearly fell into this deep dark chasm. We could hear the anguished screams of former hikers coming up from below. We pitied them and walked on.

Throwing danger to the wind, Bonnie and I charged cautiously on the well-trodden path.

If you think I actually walked across that log, then you're crazy. It was really high.

Here's the same scene (628KB MOV) in the early twenty-first century version of 8mm.

Lest there be any confusion, we drove to this overlook. And some kind strangers propped us against the wall for this photo. The guitarist was playing Pachabel's "Cannon in D," improving the ambiance so much, I tipped him US$1.00 ("a buck" as we call it here in the colonies).
